During Pride Month 2026, Chris Verdugo received two of the highest civic recognitions of his career, honored by both the City and County of San Francisco and the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus for his leadership, service, and lasting contributions to the LGBTQ+ community through the arts.
The first recognition came from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, where Board President Rafael Mandelman presented Verdugo with a commendation recognizing his decade of leadership as Chief Executive Officer of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus. The honor celebrated not only the organization's artistic excellence and remarkable growth under his tenure, but also its role as a powerful cultural institution advancing equality, visibility, and belonging through music. During Verdugo's leadership, SFGMC expanded its nationally recognized education programs, completed multiple national tours, launched the Chan National Queer Arts Center, grew from an $800,000 organization to more than $5 million annually, and solidified its position as one of the world's leading LGBTQ+ performing arts organizations.
Just days later, Verdugo was recognized at the California State Capitol as one of the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus' 2026 Pride Honorees, nominated by State Senator Scott Wiener. Each year, the Caucus recognizes individuals from across California whose work has advanced LGBTQ+ equality, visibility, and community through leadership, advocacy, public service, education, culture, and the arts. The recognition placed Verdugo among a distinguished group of leaders whose contributions have strengthened the lives of LGBTQ+ Californians throughout the state.
Together, these honors recognize more than a decade of transformational leadership. During his ten years at the helm of SFGMC, Verdugo oversaw unprecedented organizational growth, guided the Chorus through the challenges of the pandemic, expanded its national artistic and advocacy footprint, and led the creation of the Chan National Queer Arts Center—the nation's first permanent LGBTQ+ arts center of its kind. His leadership helped redefine the organization's role not only as a world-class performing arts institution, but also as a powerful voice for equality, education, and community.
While these recognitions celebrate Verdugo's individual leadership, they also reflect the collective achievements of the hundreds of singers, board members, staff, volunteers, donors, artists, and community partners who helped shape the organization's success over the past decade.
Receiving both honors during Pride Month, as Verdugo concludes his tenure as CEO after ten years of service, stands as a fitting tribute to a career dedicated to harnessing the transformative power of music to inspire hope, foster belonging, and advance LGBTQ+ equality.
