Holidays in San Francisco: festively decorated cable cars, ice skating in Union Square and the uproariously hilarious antics and stunningly beautiful music of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus. It is the “alternative” holiday experience only available in the City By The Bay.
“HoliGays Are Here” highlights include brand-new pieces by Broadway and Cabaret composers Ernie Lijoi and Lawrence Rush, a medley of Meghan Trainor’s “I’ll Be Home” and holiday standard “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” an incredible world premiere by award-winning composer Laura Karpman set to a text written by best-selling author Rebecca Walker honoring the role that mothers play in our lives, and raucous, joyful new takes on classic favorites. Expect a good bit of choreography, as well!
Please note: we will be offering Open Captioning for those needing it during Saturday’s matinee performance – Dec. 12 at 2:30PM. Open Captioning is a text display of all speech and non-speech elements of a production, similar to closed captioning on a television, run by an experienced authorized vendor. If you require seats to best experience Open Captioning for the show, please contact City Box Office at (415) 392-4400.
In 1990, the Chorus gathered for the first time on Christmas Eve at the Castro Theatre to truly bring the holidays home to those who had none. This year, the 25th Anniversary of that first musical celebration, is a real milestone. While things may have changed in the community, it is still the only place to be on Christmas Eve. We hope you’ll join us for the festivities!
It was 40 years ago when author Armistead Maupin penned the very first article bringing the colorful life and times of San Francisco to the entire world. Armistead joins us in an evening full of stories and music about our home and its heroes. The evening includes excerpts from “Naked Man,” the groundbreaking multi-movement piece originally performed by the Chorus in 1995 that chronicles the lives and loves of the men of SFGMC. “Tales Of Our City: Our Lives, Our Heroes” presents a world premiere by Mari Valverde, one of the world’s up-and-coming transgender women composers. We will also be joined by the Bay Area Rainbow Symphony. Tickets on sale soon in mid-October, 2015.
