About ‘our favorite things'

The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus is thrilled to share this intimate night of remarkable music from our two vocal ensembles; The Lollipop Guild and HomoPhonics. Each ensemble has their distinct approach to music and performance, always drawing rapturous applause whenever they perform. Whether at one of our season concerts, or at the opening of a sporting event, audiences are always wowed. This special concert at The Chan National Queer Arts Center will bring together both ensembles performing some of their greatest hits and some world premieres! While the song list is being kept a close secret, there is no doubt the vocal pyrotechnics and hilarious interpretations will make for a truly unforgettable evening.

The Lollipop Guild, established in 1980 as the premier small ensemble of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, holds the distinction of being the oldest small ensemble within the GALA Choruses network. Originally formed as a barbershop quartet, the group has since expanded, encompassing up to 10 singers by the early 2000s and diversifying its musical offerings.

Under the direction of its Music Director Paul Saccone, who first assumed leadership in the early 2000s and led for a decade before returning after a brief hiatus, the ensemble evolved significantly. Moving beyond its roots in barbershop and a cappella, the group increased in size and began exploring a broader array of genres, including show choir, musical theater, and comedic pieces.

Today, The Lollipop Guild features 24-28 talented singers, continuing to delight audiences with well-known musical selections enhanced by dynamic performances and humorous twists.

HomoPhonics was founded in 2015 by Music Director Mitch Galli during the surge of interest in contemporary pop a cappella music inspired by the Pitch Perfect franchise. This queer ensemble, composed of members from the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, specializes in contemporary pop a cappella. The ensemble skillfully performs complex harmonies, featuring up to 15 distinct vocal parts. [I deleted this whole beatboxer quote because he won’t be there.]

Originally comprising 12 members, HomoPhonics has grown to a robust ensemble of 20 vocalists. The group has garnered prestigious opportunities, including performing the National Anthem at events for major sports teams such as the Golden State Warriors and the San Francisco 49ers.
