Thank you for your support! As we wrap up our 41st season, we are filled with gratitude and awe at how far we’ve come. It was just over 40 years ago that the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus (SFGMC) gave its first performance on the steps of City Hall with a group of 100 men. Since then you have embraced us as part of your community, traveled with us as we confronted bigotry through song, and enabled us to grow to a chorus 300-singers strong.
As a donor, you know that ticket sales alone don’t cover the cost of our work. It’s because of donors like you that we are able to deepen our impact in the Bay Area and beyond.
NEW PROGRAMS, NEW AUDIENCES
With one in four youth in California reporting being physically harassed — even in the progressive Bay Area — SFGMC launched two programs aimed at supporting LGBTQ youth in finding their authentic selves and preventing teen suicide.
Reaching Youth Through Music (RHYTHM) is an immersive two-week workshop series that brings SFGMC into elementary, middle and high schools across the Bay Area.
• After experiencing RHYTHM, 62% of students said that they are more likely to speak up if they see a peer being bullied.
• Last year alone, 5,000 students were impacted. Your gift will help us reach hundreds more students this year.
“I found my people and felt really accepted for once.” – student in RHYTHM program
Expanding our reach
It Gets Better Tour, a collaboration with Speak Theater Arts, is a national touring program that provides life-changing, week-long residencies in communities where bigotry and intolerance go unchecked. The project’s core mission is to uplift, empower, connect, and reduce suicide amongst LGBTQ youth.
Your gift to the annual fund will allow us to expand our programs that provide crucial support to LGBTQ youth and their allies at a critical time in their lives.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Gay Chorus Deep South (2019) is a new documentary that chronicles the power of SFGMC’s 2017 Lavender Pen Tour. To challenge intolerance and confront a resurgence of faith-based anti-LGBTQ laws, 200 Chorus members and the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir traveled to Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina to share music that enriched the soul and inspired activism.
“Our mission is greater than ourselves.” – Chorus Member, Gay Chorus Deep South
“I was…in tears. The chorus is wonderful and what you do is so important. Thank you.”
- Mindy Kaling, actor, writer, producer and director
“The glorious sound created by the SFGMC is second only to the warm and inclusive community they create within themselves and everyone who has the good fortune of being in their presence.”
- Laura Benanti, Tony Award-winning actress
“In this time of rising intolerance and divisiveness, the work of this terrific chorus is more necessary than ever. Plus they sing great!”
- Stephen Schwartz, composer and lyricist
Your support enables the SFGMC to continue lead by creating extraordinary music and experiences that build community, inspire activism, and foster compassion at home and around the world.
